useful maths books

offtop: algorithmic puzzles Levitin

This book is good if you like experimenting with linear algebra in matlab:
Numerical Linear Algebra, Trefethen

On numerical methods this book is good, it's complete, but hard, especially for novices:
Numerical Optimization, Nocedal Jorge

And hardcore book (>1000 pages) on machine learning that is more than enough, if you will read  it from cover to cover several times and solve exercises from there:
Machine Learning: A bayesian and optimization perspective Theodoridis
